Leica Camera is pleased to introduce the LEICA APO-VARIO-ELMARIT-SL 90-280mm f2.8-4 lens which provides quiet, precise and fast auto focus in a versatile high-performance telephoto zoom. The lens combines an extended range of telephoto focal lengths and extremely good performance, from the infinite setting right up to close-up, with open aperture just as much as when stopped down. In this way, with its shutter speed that is only slightly slower than that of fixed focal lengths, it can increase the photographer's flexibility, e.g. in areas such as travel and reportage photography just as much as portraits and close-ups.
The Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL’s image quality is incredibly well optimized and corrected at every aperture and focal length, yielding sharp results in any environment. By utilizing unique double internal focusing with floating lens elements, the lens achieves fast auto focus throughout this zoom range while all movements are done within the lens barrel. The lens does not change shape or size while zooming or focusing, allowing for better weather resistance.
A lockable rotating tripod collar allows the lens to be fixed at any angle. The collar has detents every 90 degrees for rapid switching from landscape to portrait format. The lens hood supplied with the lens suppresses undesirable reflections, stray light, and prevents flare.

The APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 mm is designed to meet the highest demands in the telephoto range. In sport, wildlife and event photography, you benefit from a considerable scope, exceptional imaging performance and high-quality ‘Made in Germany’ manufacturing. Its dual internal focusing (DSD) concept enables fast autofocus on L-Mount cameras. Together with the optical image stabilization, it enables exposure times to be extended by up to 3.5 aperture stops.
The Strengths of the 90–280mm SL Zoom Lens
While working with bold subject separation, you benefit from very clean color rendering even at extreme contrast with this APO zoom lens. Focusing performs reliably even at the maximum focal length. The integrated image stabilization enables a high degree of control during handheld telephoto shots. Design Details
Twenty-three lens elements in seven moving groups form the basis for this apochromatically corrected telephoto configuration. Seven elements are made of specialized glass with anomalous partial dispersion. They compensate for chromatic aberrations across the entire zoom range. This frees your images of colour fringing in luminous highlights and contrast edges even at 280 mm. The two focusing elements of the dual internal focusing are moved by a specially developed drive concept with linear positioning of the lenses by stepping motors. This ensures very quick and quiet autofocusing and a consistently high level of imaging performance from the close focus distance to infinity. A special feature of this is that the overall length of the lens does not change when focusing and zooming. The close focus distance of the APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 f/2.8–4 is 60 cm at 90 mm. The lens also has a removable tripod plate for attaching it to a tripod. The lockable tripod collar allows the lens to be secured at any angle. A click-stop at 90 degrees allows you to quickly switch between landscape and portrait formats. Its metal housing is sealed against dust and splash water, making it ideal for demanding outdoor applications.
