Traditional IRND filters focus on eliminating only visible and infrared light, which helps reduce IR pollution, but they do not address UV light spectrums. Hot-mirror IRNDs provide complete infrared light blocking regardless of stops, but require precise placement in a matte box (coated side facing the lens) and can’t be stacked without risking internal reflections or ghosting. When using a standard ND filter to counter the increased light sensitivity afforded by the digital sensor, the effects of IR pollution become more apparent. This can often show up in the darker or black areas of your image, resulting in muddiness or a magenta colored shift occurring in your shot.
